My favorite part about the gameĪside from the designer candy of the system improvements listed above, Dawngate does a fairly good job at capturing the expectation of a MOBA minions automatically spawn and march down their lanes towards an identical enemy ancient/base, players purchase items and upgrade abilities as they farm minions and harass one-another, etc.

This leads to a lot more player roaming and movement, which increases both the depth of the game (this is good!) and the complexity of the game (this is not good!). Lastly, the game features only two lanes in its 5v5 matches, breaking the genre convention of the three-lane map. At the end of the day, auto-attacking gives the player a sense of growth (and is a natural affordance of combat games – you attack hostile things!), so the fact that a MOBA finally decided to stop punishing auto-attacking is a great achievement for new users. This makes the laning phase less about waiting for last hits, and more about auto-attacking minions until it’s time to play the last-hit game. This makes the process of item construction much less about memorizing cookie cutter builds, and more of a reactive system of “I need more of THIS stat, so I’ll upgrade in THAT direction this game.ĭawngate also hosts what I believe to be one of the best minion/gold acquisition systems I’ve ever seen in a MOBA when a minion dies, you receive gold based on how much damage you did to it – AND – if you also happen to get the last hit, you receive an additional bonus. One of Dawngate‘s most notable achievements is its item system instead of purchasing one out of 100 unrelated items, players begin by purchasing what I’ve been calling a “primitive.” Primitives are effectively a base item for a single stat (Health, Damage, etc.), which is then upgraded in a branching progression until it reaches end-game versatility (active use abilities, multiple stat bonuses, etc.). What did this game do that was different from its predecessors? The look of the game is somewhere between the playful League of Legends style and the grim DotA2 style, which communicates that Dawngate aims to be a midcore game focused on attracting experienced MOBA players that don’t want quite as much of a hardcore/meta-heavy play experience. Dawngate is a new entrant to the MOBA scene, featuring many of the genre’s existing conventions while also attempting to solve genre problems.
